Unit 4.1 - Cell Communication

LECTURE VIDEO

DESCRIPTION

Plot twist: your cells are gossiping about you right now. Sending signals, relaying messages, throwing tantrums—all without you ever knowing. Welcome to the chaotic world of cell communication, where molecules do the talking and receptors do the listening. Your *AP Biology* survival guide starts now.

In this video, we’re decoding:

  • What It Is: Cells sending and receiving signals—because being a cell is a team sport, not a solo act. One signal in, a thousand responses out. Amplification is the game.
  • Autocrine: The cell talks to itself. Peak main-character syndrome, but it works. Example: Immune cells releasing cytokines that bind back to themselves to ramp up their own response.
  • Paracrine: Local gossip—signals spread to nearby cells like whispers in a lecture hall. Example: Neurotransmitters at synapses. Short range, high impact.
  • Juxtacrine: The clingy one—cells have to physically touch because apparently some messages require a handshake. No personal space, no problem. Example: Notch signalling in development.
  • Endocrine: Long-distance drama—hormones travelling through the bloodstream like a country-wide email chain that everyone eventually reads. Example: Insulin telling your entire body to chill and absorb glucose.
  • Pheromones: Chemical love letters (or war declarations) released into the environment. Because sometimes you need to find a mate or warn the whole colony. Example: Ants leaving scent trails. Dramatic, external, and slightly weird.

Your cells are constantly chatting. Learn the languages—before your AP exam asks you to identify a signalling type and you confidently circle “the cell is being dramatic.”

Unit 4.2 - Introduction To Signal Transduction

LECTURE VIDEO

DESCRIPTION

In this video us BIG BRAINS will talk about the different aspects of noodle salads in order to substantially expand our understanding of jelly beans and puppy paws. Not only that, we will also be identifying structures we have never seen before such as feather soil, wand oil and of course: peanut nanocarbons and puffskittles.
