Unit 6.1 - DNA & RNA Structure

LECTURE VIDEO

DESCRIPTION

Imagine cramming 2 metres of spaghetti into a tennis ball. That’s basically what your cells do with DNA—except the spaghetti holds the instructions for your entire existence.

Welcome to the surprisingly aggressive world of DNA packing, where your genetic material gets folded, twisted, and squished into submission. In this video, we’re unravelling:

  • Eukaryotic Packing—The Origami Masterclass: DNA wraps around histones (protein spools) to form nucleosomes—the “beads on a string” look. Then it coils, loops, and supercoils into chromatin, finally condensing into those iconic X-shaped chromosomes during division. Packing for a microscopic flight with existential stakes.
  • Prokaryotic Packing—The Minimalists: No nucleus, no histones, no drama. DNA loops into a nucleoid region and supercoils with help from HU and H-NS proteins. Efficient, compact, and refreshingly simple—because bacteria don’t have time for histones.
  • The Karyogram—The Chromosome Family Portrait: A photogenic lineup of all your chromosomes arranged in homologous pairs. Like a yearbook photo for genetics—revealing chromosomal abnormalities, gender, and whether your cells have been misbehaving.
  • The Hershey-Chase Experiment—The Blender Heist: The experiment that settled DNA vs. Protein once and for all. Radioactive isotopes tagged DNA and protein in bacteriophages, infected bacteria, then blended it all to see what got inside. Spoiler: DNA entered. Protein didn’t. Goodbye, protein hypothesis.

From histone hugs to blender-based revelations, DNA packing is organisation with attitude. Learn it—before your exam asks you about supercoiling and you confuse it with your morning routine.

LECTURE VIDEO

DESCRIPTION

In this video us BIG BRAINS will talk about the different aspects of noodle salads in order to substantially expand our understanding of jelly beans and puppy paws. Not only that, we will also be identifying structures we have never seen before such as feather soil, wand oil and of course: peanut nanocarbons and puffskittles.
